Raw material selection for manufactured sand
Particle size distribution, or the proportion of different particle sizes in sand, has a significant impact on sand performance. When sand particles are all of the same coarseness, their internal porosity is relatively large; however, if two or three different particle sizes are used in combination, the porosity will decrease accordingly. This indicates that the porosity of sand is closely related to the rationality of its particle size distribution. A reasonable gradation not only helps save cement but also effectively improves the density and strength of concrete and mortar.
The raw materials for manufactured sand are wide-ranging, commonly including granite, basalt, river pebbles, and cobblestones. After processing, the manufactured sand produced from these raw materials will vary in strength and application depending on the type of rock.
In mining operations, there are strict requirements for the particle fineness of crushed materials. Generally, needle-shaped and flaky materials are easier to grind after entering the mill. However, for construction aggregate, the requirements are exactly the opposite, with very strict restrictions on the proportion of needle-like and flaky materials. This is mainly because cubic particles have sharp edges, which enhance the interlocking effect between particles. At the same time, cubic particles have stronger adhesion and occupy a larger surface area compared to needle-like, flaky, and round particles.
The state has established standardized inspection standards for fine aggregates, including manufactured sand. These standards cover many key indicators, such as apparent relative density, soundness, mud content, sand equivalent, methylene blue value, and angularity. These indicators comprehensively evaluate the quality and suitability of manufactured sand.
